Religious Records Research at the Archives & Library of the Ohio History Connection

Baptists

Baptists arrived in the Northwest Territory in the late 1700s, and established their first church near modern-day Cincinnati in 1790. Many more arrived after Ohio became a state, establishing religious communities across the state. The first Baptists in Ohio sought converts among Native Americans. In 1831, the Baptists founded Denison College in Granville, Ohio. By the 1850s, most Ohio cities, towns, and villages had at least one Baptist Church.
